CENTENNIAL, COLORADO BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a dynamic and effective martial art that originated in Japan but evolved and gained worldwide popularity through the efforts of Brazilian practitioners. Unlike other martial arts, Jiu-Jitsu focuses on ground-based techniques, emphasizing leverage and technique over size and strength. Our school provides a safe and welcoming environment for students of all ages and skill levels to learn the art of self-defense, improve physical fitness, and build confidence. Whether you're a beginner with no prior experience or an experienced practitioner looking to refine your skills, our knowledgeable and passionate instructors are dedicated to guiding you on your Jiu-Jitsu journey.

THE KOMPOUND ACADEMY

The Kompound Training Center approach is around demonstrating techniques and drills for actual situations. While some techniques are designed specifically for sport Jiu Jitsu, Kompound Training Center focuses on real-world situations so the techniques can be applied in the street or on the mat, making it effective regardless of where or when it is needed.

PROFESSOR BRAD NICOLARSEN

Brad Nicolarsen's journey in martial arts began at 14 years old with boxing, but he soon found his true passion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). After training in Muay Thai, he delved into the world of BJJ and is currently a 3rd degree black belt with Rafael Lovato Jr.  In 2012, Brad opened The Kompound Training Center, prioritizing his students' growth and success. He emphasizes passing on his knowledge and love for BJJ, focusing on personal goals as well as competition. Brad's gym offers classes for all levels and aims to preserve the traditional values of BJJ while embracing its evolution within the rapidly growing MMA community. He aspires to spread the word about BJJ and nurture the next generation of dedicated athletes at his school.

RAFAEL LOVATO JR. AFFILIATE SCHOOL

Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is rooted in the lineage of Rafael Lovato Jr.  With a legacy of excellence in technique and dedication to the art, our academy embodies the values and teachings passed down through his training and methodology. From this foundation, we continue to cultivate a community of practitioners who are committed to mastering the art of BJJ. Our affiliation signifies a connection to a lineage that values both tradition and innovation, ensuring that each student's journey is guided by the wisdom of generations past and the passion for shaping the future of Jiu-Jitsu.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

"The group of students and instructors were great about working with a first time student and making sure there was not an intimidation factor at all. My kids have been going for a month now as well and they never want to miss a class, going 4-5 days a week. Great job to all of you."

Josh S.

"This is a great place for anyone to train, whether you're just starting out or have been doing martial arts/jiu-jitsu for quite some time. Coming here has kept me both healthy and motivated in my everyday life experiences and the curriculum really allows for flexibility with work and other activities."

Richard B.

"We love The Kompound family, everyone is so friendly. The Kompound offers classes that work with my families busy schedule. Great kids Jiu Jitsu program with excellent kids coaches, and an adult program that is also excellent with classes offered for all levels."

What can I expect from my first BJJ class?

All of our classes follow a similar structure. We start with warms-ups that include specific muscle activation movements, followed by practical BJJ drills. Then, we teach 1–3 techniques, giving students ample time to practice each one, before ending with live positional drills or live rounds.

What do I need to bring to my first BJJ class?

Comfy workout clothes and a water bottle.

If it is a gi class, we have gis you can borrow during your free trial on a first-come, first-served basis.

What BJJ gear do I need, and does brand matter?

Gi.

Rash guard.

Mouth guard.

You will need a gi to train in many of our BJJ classes. (Check the schedule to see which classes require gis). Gis are the traditional uniforms for jiu-jitsu, similar to karate or taekwondo.

Elite is the most affordable brand of gis. They are available on Amazon and are a great starter gi. Other popular brands include Tatami, Fuji, Gold, Venum, etc., but there are no brand requirements.

Make sure to check the size guide and washing instructions to get the best fit for you.

Mouth guards are encouraged, along with rash guards and spats to wear either under your gi or by themselves for no-gi BJJ.

You can buy rash guards and no-gi shorts from us, but we do not carry gis or other gear.

What is the difference between kickboxing and Muay Thai?

The main difference is the use of elbow strikes and sweeps in Muay Thai that are not allowed in kickboxing.

While we do train some Muay Thai in Centennial, our primary focus is on Dutch-style kickboxing, which has a strong boxing base and focuses on using punches to set up kicks.

Dutch kickboxing is a strong style against Muay Thai and gives fighters a solid base to build on.

At the Kompound, we believe in equipping our members with the most effective techniques, no matter what style they are from.

What's the age range for kids martial arts classes in Centennial?

Kickboxing & BJJ kids classes are a great thing to do in Centennial for kids 4–10. There is flexibility with the upper limit depending on the child’s size and ability to follow more advanced instructions. Teens are welcome to try the adult classes!

Do I have to wear a specific color of gi?

Nope! As long as they are clean, all gis are welcome in class. Yes, even if it has another gym’s logo. We’re here to train, not put on a fashion show.

If you are interested in competing, check competition rules for gi requirements.

Yes, ample, well-lit parking is always available.

Is this South Denver gym accessible by public transportation?

Yes, this kickboxing & BBJ Gym is near the Dry Creek RTD Station, perfect for those looking for gyms near RTD E-line and R-line.

Do I need to be in shape to start BJJ or kickboxing in Centennial?

Nope! Both BJJ and kickboxing are great ways to get in shape. You can expect a challenge while you build your strength and stamina and adapt to new exercises, but safety is our first priority. You are always free to slow down or take breaks as needed, and we can adapt any exercise to accommodate any injuries or other limitations. Get excited to push through challenges and see what you are capable of!
